Maurice Potron (1872-1942) is a French Jesuit and mathematician whose main source of inspiration in economics is the encyclical Rerum Novarum. With virtually no knowledge in economic theory, he wrote down a linear model of production in which he formalized the notions of just prices and just wages. As early as 1911, he used the Perron-Frobenius theorem to prove the existence of a positive solution and established a duality result between the quantity side and the price side of the model. He returned to economics in the 1930s, but in both periods he failed to make a lasting impression upon economists.

Abstract (p. 129):
This contribution offers a first synthetic report on a comprehensive research program, which bears on the acquisition, the ciruclation and the use of Western books by the Jesuits in China in the 17th and 18th centuries. This research relies basically on contemporary testimonia, and discusses methodological questions with regard to their application. It tries to confront this information with the extant books of the Beitang collection (Beijing), and aims to a description, on this double basis, of the Jesuit reading patrimony, its patterns and main points of interest, all in relation to the ‘Sitz im Leben’ of the Jesuits in China. Apart from being a contribution to the study of the China mission and its intellectual and spiritual sources, it also contains a lot of observations bearing on the history of the European book market and its ‘expansion’ to this part of the ‘New World’.

» Juznic, Stanislav Chinese-Slovenian astronomer Hallerstein: Provincial and Visitor to Japanese Jesuit Province in Historia Scientiarum [international journal of the History of Science Society of Japan] 19/1 , 2009, pp. 55 - 71

Abstract:
The president of Beijing Imperial Astronomical Bureau, baron Hallerstein, was a Japanese Jesuit Provincial and Visitor for several decades. He never put his foot on Japanese soil, but he was always ready to learn as much about Japan as he could. Without visiting the Land of Rising Sun he gathered some relevant information about Japanese. Slovenian Hallerstein got some basic knowledge about Japan from the European books before he sailed for the Far East. In Beijing, the Koreans were his principal informers about Japan. Besides the Japanese religious circumstances, which were Hallerstein's official concern, he was mostly interested in the Japanese sciences, especially astronomy. The Beijing astronomer Hallerstein published more observations in Europe than any of his predecessors. The European scientists inquisitively expected his results because he used the best available European astronomical equipments.

This paper describes and explains the central role of the principle of contractual liberty with the Jesuits of the early modern period. Designed as a diptych, it intends to clarify how the legal and the moral philosophical tradition mutually enriched each other at the threshold of modernity. The 'ius commune' helped the Jesuits in formulating the idea of negative freedom, only for that 'ius commune' to undergo a transformation itself under the influence of the scientific account of contract law that the Jesuits were to develop on its basis. First it will be shown how the Jesuits arrived at a moral problem-solving method capable of freeing man from unduely burdensome obligations before the court of conscience through the application of the law of property and procedure. Secondly, this paper will highlight the turn towards positive freedom through the Jesuits' elaboration of a general doctrine of contract as a mutually accepted promise centered around the notions of liberty, consensualism, and the image of the will as a private legislator.

(trad. dall’inglese di Sacra Dieci).

 Abstract (p. 104):

The Lazarist priest Teodorico Pedrini (1671-1746) was chosen by Pope Clement XI for the fateful Tournon legation to the Chinese Court, but avoided its dire consequences by fortuitously missing his ship in 1702. Upon his arrival in China eight years later, he was summoned to Peking to replace the emperor Kangxi's beloved music master, Tomás Pereira (1645-1708), remaining in courtly employment until the end of his life. His 12 violin sonatas —the only known manuscript of western music remaining in China from this period— reflect his contact with Corelli during his early years in Rome. Furthermore, he was commissioned to complete a treatise on Western music —the Lülü Zhengyi (The True Doctrine of Music)— as part of a massive encyclopaedic endeavour of the Kangxi emperor. His wider significance, however, lies in his championship of papal authority against the Jesuit accommodation of the Chinese Rites to Confucius and the ancestors condemned as superstitious by a papal bull of 1704. The Peking Jesuits regarded Pedrini as a mortal threat to their very survival and succeeded in having him discredited, beaten, and imprisoned in their house, to be freed only after two years by the new emperor Yongzheng. Pedrini's extraordinary life is chronicled in over 1600 pages of letters spanning the years 1702-1744. These provide unrivalled insights into his courtly activities and offer a view of the controversies in stark contrast to the predominantly Jesuit bias of current opinion.

In examining the principle characteristics of Ricci’s missionary strategy, the article seeks to show how the fruit of his method was the interaction between the “I” and the “other” that is, between the missionary and the Chinese people. Adaptation to the Chinese culture was heavily influenced by Confucianism, which lead the Jesuits to distance themselves from the Buddhists. Their insertion among the higher classes was to gain influential support in order to penetrate Chinese mentality. The use of science in the propagation of the faith was preferred by the great interests that Chinese scholars had for science. Finally, a look into the acceptance of Confucian rites (especially funeral ones), which the Jesuits considered civil rites, was facilitated also on the part of the Chinese. The author is a professor of Chinese studies in the Catholic University of Louvain.

Abstract (p. 275): Using letters written by the Italian Jesuit missionary Niccolo Longobardo, this article explores in depth the encounter between the Christian mission and different strata of early seventeenth century Chinese society in Shangdong province. It follows Longobardo’s evangelical activities among Ming feudatory princes, Muslim mullahs, Confucian literati and leaders of secret popular religious sects. By using Jesuit records and Chinese documents of the late Ming, this article tries to analyse the attractions of Christianity for different segments of late Ming society, one that experienced a profound social, political and economic crisis. Both, the reasons for conversions and arguments against Christianity are presented in the specific social context of early seventeenth century Chinese society.

English Abstract: This paper addresses the Jesuits' introduction of medieval European literature into Ming China. One example I discuss is Alfonso Vagnone's Tianzhu shengjiao shengren xingshi, which is a Ming translation and abridgement of the well-known Legenda Aurea, a 13-century collection of hagiographies written by Jacobi A. Voragine, which includes lives of almost two hundred prominent saints. By exploring such topic as sainthood, monstrosity, and penance, I focus on the idea of sanctity as expressed in Vagnoni's Chinese rendition of the work. The saints whose biographies I deal with include St. Anthony, St. Augustine, and St. Mary Magdalene. I argue that the translation of the Legenda Aurea in the Ming is an epoch-making event in the history of Chinese translation of European literature.

The interaction and exchange between Zhang Huang, Li Zhi, Zhu Shilu, Jiao Hong, Zou Yuanbiao and Feng Yingjing from the Wang Yangming School and Matteo Ricci. The friendship and exchange between Ricci and the Yangming School had according to the author two implications: 1. it established the practice of progressive academic exchange between Ricci and the literati; 2. the growth of foreign culture came to rely on the support of the corresponding local culture and figures in academic circles.

This paper discusses the Ming Jesuit Alfonso Vagnoni's 'Shengmu xingshi' or 'Vita of the Virgin Mary,' a work that places special emphasis on the 'Mariale' or miracles of Mary, and which is generally considered the first biography of Mary in Chinese. Although it is difficult to pinpoint the exact sources of Vagnoni's depiction of the 'Mariale', this paper identifies several popular collections of Mary's miracles dating from the European Middle Ages which may have influenced the author. Surprisingly, the first model of the Faustian stories, together with other literary motifs in the history of European literature, can be found in this three-juan life of Mary, which was put into Chinese in 1631. In addition to Mary's role as Jesus' mother, three other aspects of the Virgin receive prominent attention in Vagnoni's work: First, Mary assumes the role of the Intercessor between her followers and Jesus or God; Second, she plays the role of the jealous bride who refuses any comparison of her beauty to that of other women; and finally, Mary appears as a Western counterpart to Guanyin, the son-giver, a role that is often overlooked in the European 'Mariale' tradition. This paper argues that the three roles Mary assumes in Vagnoni's Chinese rendition were shaped by changing theological and social circumstances from the first century through the Ming. 'Shengmu xingshi', the first biography of Mary in the history of China, thus takes on pivotal significance both from a theological and from a literary standpoint.

Augustin Hallerstein (1703-1774) was the last astronomer sent to Beijing by the Society of Jesus. He left Europe for China in his mid-thirties, and continued to send letters back home until he died thirty-five years later. These letters and reports contained important information on Chinese astronomy, and were read in the courts of Europe; many were also published. Hallerstein was one of the most important European astronomers in Beijing, his European publications surpassing those of his predecessors.

Abstract: This article discusses the Chinese perception of European perspective, which was brought to China by the Jesuits in the seventeenth century and was closely associated with the broader missionary and cultural frameworks. Based on the sources illustrating Chinese responses, this study argues that the central factor of these Chinese responses indicates a perception of perspective on a technical level, and that the Chinese impression reveals a complex of illusion and realism caused by this level, which may have demonstrated a profound perception in the realm of religion. Illusion should point to a psychological and anthropological view of this perception, rather than to a question of scientific objectivity.

The Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola in the China Mission of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries

Ignatius' Exercises played a much greater role in the China mission than so far expected. There was a great variety in the concrete ways in which they were put into practise. Initially Matteo Ricci used the first week of the Exercises with individual retreatants. Later Giulio Aleni gave the Exercises by way of illustrations in the Fujian Province and Prospero Intorcetta translated the Exercises into Chinese. In the eighteenth century, the French Jesuits led group retreats and missionaries and Chiense Jesuits wrote specialised treatises for meditations during eight or ten-day retrats and during daily life. The variety of these developments shows that from the outset the Jesuits and their Chinese converts put a lot of effort into spritual education and practice by means of the Spiritual Exercises.

» Zhang, Qiong From "Dragonology" to Meteorology: Aristotelian Natural Philosophy and the Beginning of the Decline of the Dragon in China in Early Science and Medicine 14/1-3 Brill, 2009, pp. 340 - 368

The cult of the dragon in China, which expressed itself not only in the ritual sacrifices to the dragon kings during drought and floods but also in the rationalization of the dragon's power to make rain by many serious thinkers from diverse intellectual persuasions, was first subjected to sustained criticism during the early modern era as part of an "enlightenment" drive against popular cults and "superstitions" led by some of the Jesuit-inspired Chinese scholars. This paper examines how these critics drew on Aristotelian conceptions of nature and meteorological theories introduced by the Jesuit missionaries to attack the core ideas of the traditional dragon lore and their underlying cosmology. It argues that the de-animated and rigidly stratified view of nature articulated by this small but clearly discernable group of Chinese critics can be seen as marking the beginning of the decline of the dragon, the allegedly semi-divine aquatic animal which swims, walks, flies, and makes rain.

» Shirai, Jun Hiragana Ligatures of the Jesuit Mission Press in Japan in Journal of Asian and African Studies no 76 , 2008, pp. 5 - 20

From the abstract: The Jesuit Mission Press in Japan produced documents relating to the missionary work performed y the SJ in Japan from the 16th to the early 17th c. Some of these documents contain Chinese and Japanese characters, using Jap. hiragana variants and uninterrupted writing. Scholars assume that these documents reproduced the appearance of original manuscripts by using hiragana typography and ligatures. In principle, these ligatures were used for high-frequency character strings; however, there were some exceptions. For instance, metal type production efficiency, ligature substitute for Chinese characters. In particular, ligatures in these documetns contribute to the punctuation of words. This linguistic function is derived from paying attention to the particle position.

Matteo Ricci has long been celebrated as one of the greatest mediators between Europe and East Asia. To see his extraordinary experience in China from a different perspective, this article takes a close look at the many intricacies that either led to or resulted from his reliance on accommodation as an evangelizing policy. These intricacies made him both remarkably successful in what he did not necessarily plan to do and noticeably unsuccessful in what he single-mindedly set out to accomplish. (Info: Ad Dudink)

» Decock, Wim Lessius and the breakdown of the scholastic paradigm in Journal of the History of Economic Thought, 31/1 , 2009, pp. 57 - 78

Abstract:

Hailed by some as a precursor of modern economic analysis, Leonardus Lessius (1554-1623) might have been in the vanguard of a paradigm shift in early modern economic thought. From his treatment of a case of conscience dealing with information and just pricing known as “The Merchant of Rhodos” emerges a stunning approval of profit-making based on cunning exploitation of a dominant knowledge position. In the present article, Lessius’ discussion of this case will be examined and set against the background of late scholastic economics. I will argue that by consistently applying a legalistic doctrine of the just price, Lessius both fulfilled and partly outgrew the scholastic paradigm in economic thought. His elaborations reflect the idea of the market as an increasingly impersonal game in which, among their peers, prudent businessmen should be allowed to gain from their clever insight into market mechanisms.

» Asen, Daniel Manchu Anatomy': Anatomical Knowledge and the Jesuits in Seventeenth- and Eighteenth-Century China in Social History of Medicine 22/1 , 2009,

Abstract:
Beginning in the last decade of the seventeenth century, the French Jesuits Joachim Bouvet and Dominique Parrenin instructed the Kangxi Emperor in contemporary anatomical knowledge. Parrenin's instruction resulted in a Manchu anatomical atlas containing Harvey's discovery of the circulation of the blood. This paper uses this case to examine the role of anatomy in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century European understandings of China and its medicine. I argue that the authority which Bouvet and Parrenin afforded anatomical knowledge gained from dissection informed their comparisons of Chinese and European medical learning. I also examine ways in which illustrations of this atlas were made to demonstrate the certainty of European anatomy and its applicability to Chinese bodies. Production of the ‘Manchu Anatomy’ was thus an important moment in the process through which anatomy became a category in European understandings of China and its medicine during and after the eighteenth century.

This paper discusses the significance of developing and
updating personal name authority records for individuals who
are referred to by their bi- or multi-lingual works.
This work is based on a case study of OCLC
(Online Computer Library Center)'s name authority records of
well-known Jesuits who played a unique role in the cultural
exchange between Europe and China during the sixteenth through
eighteenth centuries. It is concluded that using ready
reference works to develop thematic personal name authority
records is feasible and will facilitate international resource
sharing. Overseas Chinese librarians play an important role in
this endeavour. It is hoped that the findings in this study
will raise awareness of this important issue so that more
overseas Chinese librarians will participate in implementing
cooperative name authority projects at local, national,
and/or international levels.

Abstract (p. 417): Around 1716, the French astronomer and academician Joseph-Nicolas Delisle (1688-1768) took up a new project: the twinned topics of Chinese chronology and astronomy. Unable to access Chinese sources and not knowing any fellow savants who shared this particular interest, Delisle methodically made extracts and compiled data from the existing European literature. Among Delisle's papers at the Observatoire de Paris still exist the results of this research, including a list of the books he found relevant. This paper develops a close reading of Delisle's notes from this period to stage his journey into a recondite arena of technical and textual analysis, and to examine the scholarly practices and generic conventions through which early modern European savants confronted the Chinese astronomical tradition.

Abstracts:There is a constant "localization" process in the spread of Catholic in Late Ming China. Tianzhu jiangsheng chuxiang jingjie (a heurmenutics of texts on the birth of Lord) is a Chinese woodcut engraving book of the Italian missionary, Jiulio Aleni. This work takes the life story of Jesus from Gospels, and it follows a popular style of woodcut engraving comic books in late Ming dynasty. In this work, Aleni not only follows Matteo Ricci's tradition of "academic Missionaries", but also began to seek for "accommodation" with the local literati culture of Fujian. The images and language in this book are familiar to Chinese readers, so it could be easy to spread from all classes of believers to the non-believers. The use of local media reflects a deeper understanding of "localization" principle, and it also reflects the new attempts of Jesuit toward "popularization".

Abstract:
Many Chinese believe that France is a “romantic” nation though

they may offer different answers to the question “why”.

A recent source study shows that this image comes from the

travel note written by a French priest Julie Aleni when he

took a mission in China, from Wonders in the Voyage and

Traveling around Europe and America by Zhang Deyi, a Chinese

diplomat in France at that time and from Travel Notes by Wang

Tao. Therefore, many Chinese modern writers borrowed this image

to their works. Hence it has been created as a set image in

the intertextual context of cultural homogeneity and

heterogeneity.

Therefore, this paper is intended to trace the signs of these

cultural interactions so as to see how “Romantic France” has

come to be a set image in Chinese culture.

Abstract (p. 44):
This essay explores the dual nature of Giuseppe Castiglione\'s career. As a professional trained artist and Lay Brother, from 1715 to 1766 Castiglione was deployed through the Jesuit Order in the Qing workshops. My analysis of Castiglione\'s unique career is based predominantly on an unpublished manuscript source, the Jesuit posthumous memoir of the artist, today in the main archive of the Order in Rome. The memoir describes Castiglione\'s professional engagement between his European and Chinese patrons who supported and supervised his work: the Jesuit Order, and the mid-Qing Emperors. Far from being just the description of an individual career, the memoir sheds light on important aspects of the early modern cultural interchange between Europe and China, as well as on the eighteenth-century European missionary strategy in Asia.

abstract :

Kangxi (r. 1662-1722), the second rule of the Manchu Qing dynasty (1644-1911), turned Beijing into a centre of learning, striving in particular to integrate Western learning with Chinese learning, and the sciences with scholarship. At the same time, when Louis XIV sent Jesuit mathematiciens to the emperor of China in 1685, his intention was to turn the Paris Académie royale des sciences into a centre towards which knowledge from all the world, including China, was to converge; this turned Beijing into a relay point on a world map centred in Paris. The imperial capital thus played a role in two projects of construction of universal knowledge, configured very differently. Some exchanges between the two projects did occur, bearing witness to the mutual recognition of the new products of the circulation of knowledge.

This paper reviews Xu Guangqi and Matteo Ricci’s translation of The Elements

of Geometry and attempts to analyze their translation activity in three

aspects, proposed by André Lefevere, namely “ideology”, “patronage” and

“poetics”. From the historical point of view, Xu Guangqi, assisted by

Matteo Ricci, introduced western geometry concepts and scientific ideas

to Chinese people by translating The Elements of Geometry.

Nevertheless, in the process of translation, they were greatly influenced b

by the ideology, patronage and poetics in the Ming Dynasty. This paper,

guided by André Lefevere’s theory, ventures to propose the reasons why

Xu Guangqi and Matteo Ricci chose to translate the scientific works

but not the works in other fields; why they particularly singled out

Elements as the first piece of scientific works for translation in

China and finally why they translated only six volumes of the works

and left the other nine out? Tentative answers to these questions are:

(1) Scientific works were translated for the sake of reversing the

form-centered Li theory and arousing the practical learning among the

literati.

(2) The translation of Elements was encouraged by the patronage (in this

case, the publication system of the Ming Dynasty) and was also a choice

favored by the patron (in this case, Xu Guangqi).

(3) The translation of the first six volumes of Elements resulted from

the dominant poetics, imposing pressure on Ricci, who was not sure

about the acceptability of the translated works, so he wanted to

translate the first six volumes as a prying attempt.

Matteo Ricci’s selection of source texts and strategies in his translation of western learning: a perspective from the linguistic adaptation theory),

Abstract:
Drawing from Jef Verschuren’s theory of linguistic adaptation,
this paper analyzes the selection of source texts and translation
strategies in Matteo Ricci’s translation of Western learning.
The authors hold that like other types of verbal communication,
translation is a continuous choice-making process.
The translator should adapt to the communicative context and the
audience he faces, and should select source texts and translation
strategies accordingly. This is exactly what Matteo Ricci did
when he undertook to translate Western classics into Chinese.
His choice of source texts was geared to the needs of the Chinese
intellectuals in the late Ming Dynasty, and his selection of translation
strategies was adapted to what he perceived as the Chinese cultural
traditions.

Abstract (E): This paper analyses the genealogy of the Freudian "Unheimliche" in the work of French scholar Michel de Certeau. Certeau does not use it as a stable concept because he consciously questions the unproblematic use of so-called univocal concepts. Yet, an attentive reading shows how his discourse exercises both the temporal and the spatial dimensions of the uncanny.

(New Perspective on the Methodology of Cultural Contacts in the Studies of the Cultural Encounters between China and Europe in the Seventeenth Century)

Abstract (p. 277/78):
Professor Nicolas Standaert's article, entitled "Methodology in View of Contact between Cultures: The China Case in the Seventeenth Century," published in 2002, is the most recent methodological analysis of the cultural encounters between China and Europe in western scholarship. The present article discusses Standaert's theories and arguments within the broader methodological evolution of "cultural history," from the perspective of western historiography, and raises some questions for further reflection. There are two purposes for this discussion.
First, various concepts in the theory of cultural contacts, as elaborated by Standaert, are associated with the historiographical tendency to cultural history, and which stirs several issues for cross-cultural studies. Therefore, it is hoped that the present analysis of this article will contribute to the understanding of the significance of cross-cultural studies, which did open up a variety of new perpectives for historical studies. The following issues will be discussed: how anthropology affects cross-cultural studies, how and why the concept of "exchange" has been replaced by one of "interaction," the re-definition of the nature of "texts and context," and so on.
Second, in recent decades, Mainland Chinese scholars have been actively engaged in the study of Christianity in China and the cultural encounters between both sides. Their efforts stirred new thinking in Chinese studies. However, their perspectives were developed within a different context from the western one, thus generating different research results. This article is mainly concerned with the perspectives from western research, but hopes to provide clues as to how to bring the research from the Chinese and western scholars together to a prospective historiography. This article also intends to discuss the above methodological issues, covering the theories of cultural history. It is not written as a review essay alone, and ventures to offer a specific analysis of cross-cultural studies in western scholarship, as starting from Standaert's methodology.

Description of a research project
Mark McConaghy, East Asian Studies
Sponsor: Dr. Joanna Waley-Cohen, History & East Asian Studies)

Jesuit missionaries in late-Ming dynasty China faced great difficulties in their efforts to convert the Chinese populace to Christianity. The dominant Chinese social ideology of the time, Confucianism, was not at all easily reconcilable with Christianity.
Indeed, many historians of China have argued that Christianity and Confucianism, in both their theoretical and practical forms, were by their very nature absolutely incompatible with one another. This assertion finds an important challenge, however, in the second and third generation of Chinese Christian converts who, by the 1670s, were actively finding ways to integrate Christianity and Confucianism. My research project focused on how one of these Chinese Christian converts "the literati scholar Zhang Xingyao" tried to reconcile the disparate ideologies into one overarching social and religious program. To do so, I used a number of secondary sources concerning Zhang Xingyao's life and teachings. I discovered that Zhang's reconciliation was based on a critical reinterpretation of both ideologies that failed to address anumber of important conceptual differences that existed between them. Specifically, Christianity's demand for allegiance to a foreign ruler presented a direct challenge to the legitimacy of the Confucian emperor himself, making any reconciliation of the two doctrines a tenuous one at best. The precarious nature of Zhang's Christian-Confucian ideological nexus helps explain why it never achieved widespread acceptance in China.

English abstract (p. 189):
The main objective of this article is to present the research project "China in Spain : a digitized corpus of Spanish documents on China from 1555 to 1900" (CHE), directed by doctor Dolors Folch i Fornesa, director of the Escola d'Estudis de l'Àsia Oriental (School of East Asian Studies). The main target of the CHE project has been to locate, transcribe, digitize and publish in web format an important amount of the Spanish sources on China from the16th to the 19th century. This project, whose results can be freely consulted through a website (http://www.upf.edu/asia) created specifically to give greater diffusion of the research, has allowed and it will allow to open a multiplicity of lines of research on China focused on different knowledge areas. Throughout the research a special attention has been put into two main lines of investigation.
In the first place the information that was generated from the Philippine islands: information from the governors, the members of the 'cabildo' (Town Hall), the Manila High Court, or the religious orders that were implanted there. Secondly, the texts related to China that were generated and/or were published directly in China, Iberian Peninsula or Mexico. The main objective of the research has been to show these sources, especially the unpublished ones but also those which where already published but which it has been difficult to consult, and place them at the disposal of the international community in the original language in which they were written, Spanish.

Abstract:
The Jesuit Christophorus Clavius, in his Latin edition of Euclid's Elements, stressed the religious functions of that book to reach divinity. Following this way, Matteo Ricci used the same book to help to evangelize the China of Ming era. Therefore Jesuits had to cope with the traditional Chinese geometry whose arguments were mainly based on pictures. In this context, explicit statements of the relations between geometry and theology are recorded. The main differences between European and Chinese ways of doing sciences are told: the former are transcendent and dualistic, the latter immanent
and complex. At last, Western sciences succeed in penetrating Chinese culture because of the war. The art of warfare was explicity mentioned
by Matteo Ricci as one of the several professions who needed their mathematics.

Abstract:
Between 1590 and 1660 Macao was the stage of several contradictions, in particular of struggles of power among the different elites of the city's social scenery. Throughout this article I draw, in general lines, its dynamics and how it was centred in struggles of power. This situation was owned, mainly, to the transformation of Macao into a specific project of Jesuit evangelization as well as to the fact ofbeing a mercantile city presenting strong autonomy towards aPortuguese centralized power.

Abstract:
By the early 18th Century, the 'Rites Controversy' among the missionaries themselves has evolved into a culture conflict between the Qing Empire and Europe. To make the European missionaries in China follow the rites of Matteo Ricci, Emperor Kangxi had French Jesuit missionaries Joachim Bouvet and Jean Francoise Foucquet study the Book of Changes in his royal palace and had further conversions with the European missionaries based on their researches. Not only did this cultural conversation reveal the Figurist's tendencies, as represented by Bouvet, and the interior conflict among the missionaries themselves after the 'Rites controversy', but also showed Kangxi's policies towards the missionaries, as well as his attitude towards Western culture and religion.

Abstract (p. 153):
Jesuits were the first Europeans to live in China and to visit extensively gardens, conveying to Western Europe information on Chinese garden art. Their descriptions had a lasting impact on European garden design. When Jesuit descriptions of Chinese gardens reached Europe, England was debating a new design that apparently showed similarities to what the Jesuits had observed in China because it favored natural forms and displayed a composite approach. The awareness of the presence of intriguingly informal gardens in China favored the diffusion of the English garden through Europe in the second half of the XVIIIth century. In France especially, emphasis on picturesque and exotic features, inspired to the descriptions sent by Jesuits, led to a hybrid form of garden, which was called 'Chinois' or 'Anglo-chinois' because it looked strikingly exotic though distinctively Anglo-Saxon. This paper will focus on XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries' printed sources in European languages, reporting descriptions on Chinese gardens by Jesuits. These descriptions increased the European awareness of Chinese garden design and had a seminal role in engendering a novel type of garden inspired by natural scenery.
Jesuits commented mostly on the irregularity of the arrangements they found in garden design. They detailed the specific scenes, vistas, and pavilions that gave Chinese gardens their atmosphere, and reported on the artistic manipulation of elements borrowed from the landscape. The attraction for an artificial nature, expressed in Chinese garden art and reported by Jesuits, matched the prevailing rococo taste in Europe. Such descriptions contributed to accentuate the exotic, curious, bizarre characteristics of the English landscape garden as it spread over the continent, where it was enriched with a proliferation of grottos, rocailles, and pavilions. Jesuit descriptions of Chinese gardens played a part in specifying the assortment of scenes that appeared in picturesque gardens.

Summary:
This essay, based on research for a series of scholarly studies on the Yijing (I Ching or Classic of Changes), argues that the use of the Changes by the Jesuits in eighteenth century China, like the "accomodation strategy" of the Society of Jesus more generally, must be viewed in broad historical and comparative perspective. What I seek to show here is that the Jesuit effort to emphasize affinities between the Bible and the Yijing in Qing dynasty China was part of a much larger process by which the Changes came to be transmitted to other cultures, and that this process of transmission and transformation, sometimes described as "globalization," sheds useful light on questions of cross-cultural contact and cross-cultural understanding. Although the Jesuit hermeneutical strategy described as "Figurism" was severely condemned by the other Catholic orders, eventually proscribed by the Church, and maligned even within the Jesuit establishment itself, this interpretive approach was part of a long tradition of Yijing exegesis and textual transmission--one that not only predated the Jesuits by several centuries but also proved remarkably tenacious well after the Society of Jesus had been disbanded. Indeed, evidence of its tenacity can still be found today, both East and West.

Abstract:

This paper, in four sections, discusses four related aspects of the Shengmeng ge, a debate poem translated into Chinese by Giulio Aleni in collaboration with Zhang Gen in Fujian in 1637. The first section focuses on the formative stages of the Shengmeng ge and how its antecedents were later transformed into the Royal Debate in Britain, from which were taken the Latin original of the Shengmeng ge, generally known as the Visio Sancti Bernardi, yet written by an unknown British priest at the turn of the twelfth century, and its counterpart in Medieval English. The second section explores the translated text against the Visio Sancti Bernardi and finds that Aleni did translate it "roughly" primarily due to the limitations of Chinese prosody. The Visio Sancti Bernardi is generally supposed to be the most popular debate poem between the body and soul in Medieval Europe, and the Shengmeng ge can be taken as the first rendered and thus transported poem from England into China. The third section considers the reception of the Shengmeng ge in China and focuses on Chinese Christians' response to the translated poem as expressed in their prefaces and epilogues. The Christians' initial responses to this poem were highly influenced by traditional Chinese attitudes toward dreaming. Thus the Chinese topos of "life as a dream" is echoed in those readings of the Shengmeng ge. This notwithstanding, as Christian readers interpreted more closely the translated song, their views changed to more closely approximate Western understandings of the Visio Sancti Bernardi. The poem was composed primarily to reflect the Christian fear of the Last Judgment. The final section returns to the British development of the poetic debate between body and soul. In addition to comparing Chinese and Western dream literatures, this section relocates the Visio Sancti Bernardi in the context of English metaphysical poetry in the seventeenth century, since no translated debate poems other than the Shengmeng ge can be found in imperial China.

Abstract (p. 136):

This paper, in four sections, discusses four related aspects of the 'Shengmeng ge', a debate poem translated into Chinese by Giulio Aleni in collaboration with Zhang Geng in Fujian in 1637.
The first section focuses on the formative stages of the 'Shengmeng ge' and how its antecedents were later transformed into the Royal Debate in Britain from which were taken the Latin original of the 'Shengmeng ge', generally known as the 'Visio Sancti Bernardi', yet written by an unknown British priest at the turn of the twelfth century, and its counterpart in Medieval English.
The second section explores the translated against the 'Visio Sancti Bernardi' and finds that Aleni did translate it 'roughly' primarily due to the limitations of Chinese prosody. The 'Visio Sancti Bernardi' is generally supposed to be the most popular debate poem between the body and soul in Medieval Europe, and the can be taken as the first rendered and thus transported poem from England into China.
The third section considers the reception of the 'Shengmeng ge' in China and focuses on Chinese Christians response to the translated poems as expressed in their prefaces and epilogues. The Christians' initial responses to this poem were highly influenced by traditional Chinese attitudes toward dreaming. Thus the Chinese topos of "life as a dream" is echoed in those readings of the 'Shengmeng ge'. This notwithstanding, as Christian readers interpreted more closely the translated song, their views changed to more closely approximate Western understandings of the 'Visio Sancti Bernardi': the poem was composed primarily to reflect the Christian fear of the Last Judgement.
The final section returns to the British development of the poetic debate between body and soul. In addition to comparing Chinese and Western dream literatures, this section relocates the 'Visio Sancti Bernardi' in the context of English metaphysical poetry in the seventeenth century, since no translated debate poems other than the 'Shengmeng ge' can be found in imperial China.

English abstract (p. 79/80):

The Jesuit missionary from Portugal, Francisco Furtado (1587-1653), with help of Li Zhizao (1565-1630), published the Huan You Quan, Chinese version of the Commentary of De Caelo of Aristotle in Hangzhou in 1628, which intended to introduce once again the heliocentric, Aristotelian cosmology into China. The first introduction of it had been made by Matthew Ricci (1543-1610) in 1604, with the publication of the Qiankun Tiyi, Chinese version of Commentary of the Sphere of Sacrobosco by Clavius. At that time, in Beijing, the imperial high official, Xu Guangqi (1562-1633) just started the official introduction of the Tychonic astronomical system in order to prepare the delayed calendrical reform for the Ming dynasty. The enterprise was supported mainly by the same Jesuit missionaries from Rome, Johann Terrentius (John Schreck), Johann Adam Schall von Bell, and so on. The latter followed the Tychonic world system, while the former the Aristotelian, Ptolemaic system. But, back in Rome, after Galileo published the Nuncius Sidereus in 1610, Christoph Clavius, the professor of mathematics at Collegio Romano, who had supported the geocentric idea even after the public-ation of De Revolutionibus by Copernicus in 1543, silenced about the Ptolemaic world system until his death in 1612. It was clear that the idea could not be maintained any more. Thus many astronomers and missionaries were rather free to choose cosmologies, which were able to properly interpret the astronomical discoveries by Galileo, as far as they were not the heliocentric idea. Thus Tychonic world system was the first, the most powerful, candidate to be chosen to rely on. The successor of Clavius as the mathematical professor at Collegio Romano, who was influential for the Holy Office, must thus have been tolerant about the cosmology.
As a result, the missionary astronomers, who came to Beijing to help Xu Guangqi's initiative, chose the Tychonic astronomy to edit the Chongzhen Lishu, inaugurated in 1629. But, some of the other missionaries did not necessarily have the same idea with those at Beijing astronomical bureau. Therefore Furtado's action can be understood as their intention of making clear of their support of the traditional Aristotelian cosmology. Especially he made clear of his stance in the Huan You Quan, writing his refusal of the fluidity and adherence to the solidity of spheres, while the missionaries in Beijing were on the side of the idea of fluidity and wavering on corruptibility, while holding firmly to celestiality and, without saying that, to the centrality of the Earth in the universe. Such belief in the fluidity of the heavens reflected the opinion of the majority after the debate in the 1620's in Europe.

Abstract (p. 176):
Matteo Ricci (1552-1610), Italian missionary who came to China in 1582 to preach Catholicism, was not only the first to introduce religious music of the West into China, but also the first to introduce local operatic music and sacrificial music of China into the West. Due to his rudimentary knowledge of music, however, his contribution to the musical exchange is rather limited.

» Huang, Xiang The trading zone communication of scientific knowledge in Science in Context, vol. 18, no. 3 , 2005, pp. 393 - 427
Abstract:
The linguistic relativist thesis maintains that there is no neutral ground for different scientific traditions with different theoretic frameworks to communicate rationally, due to the fact that linguistic structure crucially decides the way people think about reality. For quite a long time, historical studies of scientific exchange between East and West have been guided by this thesis. The challenge to this thesis comes from recent studies by Peter Galison, who argues that scientists from different research traditions can communicate rationally in a way similar to the trading exchanges between two countries, in which a local coordination can be reached even if there is a global disagreement about the corresponding word usage in two natural languages. In this paper, I try to show that the concept of trading zone communication provides an interesting and useful theoretical tool to examine how, in the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries, Chinese scientists communicated with and learned Western knowledge from Jesuit scientists by building local coordination among them. In the first section I introduce the basic ideas of Galison's trading zone theory. In the second section I study the metaphysical, ontological, and epistemological differences between Chinese science and Western science. If the linguistic relativist thesis is taken for granted, these differences are likely to lead many historical studies on Jesuit science in China to reach the relativist conclusion. The third section deals with some of the basic concepts of the trading zone theory to explain how local rational communication among Chinese and Jesuit scientists was built and developed. In the last section I argue that Galison's trading zone theory can help us understand how Chinese scientists learned new knowledge from the Jesuits, especially astronomical and mathematical knowledge, despite the global differences between these two research tradition.

(in Japanese)

An important observation which Shibata rightly makes is that the 1847 reprint of Jiren shipian, on which the text of Jiren shipian in the 2001 edition of Ricci's Chinese writings (Li Madou zhongwen zhuyu ji, in traditional / simplified characters, City University of Hongkong Press / Fudan daxue chubanshe) is based, actually is a reprint revised in accordance with the 18th-century prohibition of using 'tian' (Heaven) or 'shangdi' (Sovereign-on-high) for God, which terms were 'corrected' into 'tianzhu' (Lord of Heaven) or 'shangzhu' (Supreme Lord). Shibata gives fifteen examples of such changes in the 1847 reprint (pp. 50-51), but they are not the only ones (e.g., Hongkong edition, p. 522, column 14, and p. 528, column 5, 'shangdi' changed into 'shangzhu'; p. 533, column 8, 'tian' changed into 'zhu').

» Sweet, Michael J. Desperately Seeking Capuchins. Manoel Freyre's Report on the Tibets and their Routes (Tibetorum ac eorum Relatio Viarum) and the Desideri Mission to Tibet in JIATS (Journal of the International Association of Tibetan Studies), no 2 , 2006, pp. 1 - 33
Abstract (p. 1):
This article contains the first complete translation of the Portuguese Jesuit Manoel Freyre's 1717 confidential report on his journey to Tibet as the companion of the famed Italian Jesuit missionary, Ippolito Desideri. The introduction examines the Desideri mission in its historical context of declining Jesuit influence, opposition from other orders, and differences between Jesuits in Rome and India over the desirability of establishing a presence in Tibet.
Reading Freyre's account against Desideri's writings and other contemporary documents, the paper concludes that Freyre's covert charge was to gather intelligence on the Capuchin missionaries in Tibet and surrounding areas. It is argued that this hidden agenda determined key decisions: leaving Ladakh and traveling to Central Tibet against Desideri's strong wishes, Freyre's abrupt departure from Lhasa, and his long stays in areas of Capuchin influence on his return trip to Agra. Freyre's observations of Tibetan culture are discussed, as well as his generally negative evaluation of Tibet, and it is concluded that he did not support any additional investment of Jesuit human and financial resources in a Tibet mission.

One of the Jesuit publications in Japan, "Dictionarium Latino Lusitanicum, ac Iaponicum" (1595), was compiled by several Jesuits, Japanese and European, based on the Latin polyglot dictionary by Ambrogio Calepino. By analyzing several examples, we can deduce the rough process of the translation. (From the abstract).
The author gives an introduction, remarks on the dictionary itself, and several examples, i.e., nébula, praegnans, sphagitides, caligo, asteriscus, exuuiae, oficina dicendi, lagopus, spumans, protrimenta, oecumenicum concilium.

Abstract of Billings (p. 1):
This essay offers a 'sinographic' reading of Athanasius Kircher's bilingual critical edition of a famous Tang dynasty monument (discovered in 1625) about Nestorian Christians, which frames the material in China illustrata (1667). The author argues that Kircher's mode of translation is a doctrinal polemic that attempts to reconstruct an imaginary text from the Chinese inscription in order to contain unorthodox meanings that interfere with the Jesuit identity that is positively projected onto the stone.

[The essay published here is part of llustrating China, a book in progress about early modern representations of China and their textual legacies.]

Reference to an ode in honor of the Jesuit China missionary A. Rudamina within a 17th century poetic Lituanian collection published in Latin in Antwerp (1634).
In ode 14 from the second book, written upon the occasion of Andriejus Rudamina leaving for the Eastern missions, wherein Mary is asked to guard his ship and protect it from storms, the favourite Italian humanist motive of Mary as the sea star, stella maris, the guardian of seafarers, is elaborated upon, covered in Horatian lexical expressions (esp. Carm. III, 22, IV)."
