ISBN 978-3-87476-589-3) Abstract: One of the characteristics of the specific modernity of the Jesuit order was the concept of a multipolar world whose center was no longer Jerusalem or Rome. This new world view enabled Alessandro Valignano S.J. (1539-1606) to write the first comparative study of China, Japan, and India (“Historia del principio y progresso de la Companía de Jesús en las Indias Orientales" / History of the Commencement and Development of the Society of Jesus in the East Indies). The treatise provides us with interesting insights into the the Jesuits’ perception of Asian religions, societies, political systems, and everyday life and it also reveals some keystones of Jesuit self-perception. » Tardieu, Jean Pierre La esclavitud de los negros y el plan de Dios: la dialéctica de los jesuitas del Virreinato del Perú in Esclavitud, economía y evangelización: las haciendas jesuitas en la América virreinal Lima: PUCP, Fondo Editorial, 2005, pp. 67 - 81

Ian Inkster (ed.), 215 pp. (covering two special issues), ISBN 9781441136114 Special Issue: Kent Deng and Jerry Liu (eds.), Chinese Technological History: The Great Divergence., pp. 1-101 Abstract article: The first part of this study considers both general and specific publications that have re-framed the way China specialist and others have conceived Chinese science and attempts to relate these representations to diverging patterns of economic development between China and Europe before the 19th century. In the second part, this essay focuses on the Jesuit transmission of European science to China, and its consequences. It argues that the Ming and Qing governments’ efforts to control the Jesuit-transmitted knowledge in these fields stimulated ever more interest among local scholars in Chinese traditions of mathematics and astronomy, which culminated in the 18th-century ‘evidential research’ movement. But because the scientific knowledge the Jesuits conveyed was already out of date, before their arrival in China, local scholars never had the possibility to make a complete reassessment of their own mathematical and astronomical practices. As the primary and – at times, the only – translators of Western scientific thought to China, the Jesuits had an enormous historical impact on how Chinese scholars became trapped in a pre-Copernican universe in which Chinese natural philosophy, with its focus on metaphysical interpretations of the natural world, remained entrenched until the 19th century. pp. 81-86, Introduction to the history of Chinese science in a global perspectives: Old and new debates pp. 86-91, Jesuit scientific mission in China: Flattery as strategy pp. 91-93, Helping to make the earth stand still: The Jesuit agenda and Chinese priorities pp. 93-96, The significance of the first encounter: Intellectual dead end? pp. 97-98, Some further observations; pp. 98-101, Notes and references. Summary of the lecture at the 54th International Conference of Eastern Studies, 15-23 May 2009, Tokyo (Toho Gakkai). The negotiations between the Russian and Chinese empires at Nerchinsk involved a multitude of actors speaking different languages, with different cultural backgrounds and goals. ... All sides had to adjust their expectations to bridge these large cultural divides. Pereira and the Jesuits skillfully exploited their intermediate position between the empires to gain influence with both Russia and China. The Nerchinsk settlement was a turning point in Eurasian history because of their influence. The paper also discusses changing interpretations of the Nerchinsk treaty from the seventeenth century to present. » Vanysacker, Dries Un point de vue de juriste, de théologien ou plutôt de jésuite au service de la Contre-Réforme? Having read the "Relatione della nuova missione del Padre della Compagnia di Giesù al Regno del Cocincina" of Cristoforo Borri S. J.(1631), who had lived in Saigon from 1610 to 1623 and provided an outline of Vietnamese grammar, Campanella became aware of the fact that overt morphology is far from being universal and that languages can work perfectly without the complex formal apparatus known from familiar European languages. This led him to the formulation (in his Grammaticalia, included in his Philosophia naturalis published in 1638 (one year after Descartes' Discours de la méthode!) of a new theory of word classes, based not on contingent, language-dependent criteria such as morphology, but on philosophical concepts of truly universal scope. For Cristoforo Borri S.J. (1583-1632, who stayed in Macao in 1616/17 and 1622/23, cf. Abstract (p. 91): This paper begins with an examination of the context of the production of the first Chinese version of the Newtonian tables of the Sun and Moon, and argues that the compilation of these tables by Jesuit astronomers in China was a response to the challenge of native Chinese astronomers to their authority in the official Bureau of Astronomy. Then the relationship between these tables and those eventually incorporated in the Later Volumes of the Thorough Investigation of Calendrical Astronomy Imperially Composed [Yuzhi Lixiang Kaocheng Houbian, 1742] is discussed from a comparative perspective. It is found that these two sets of tables were based on the same set of underlying principles, although the earlier ones are more compact in format than the later ones. Finally, possible European sources of the tables are explored, and the paper concludes with the argument that the tables were a result of reconstruction by the Jesuit fathers [Ignaz Kögler and Andrew Pereira] in China on the basis of Newton's theory of the motion of the Moon, Grammaticus' luni-solar tables, and new data from other leading astronomers in Europe (such as Cassini). » Ettel, Reinhold Jesuitische Anfänge - Herausforderungen im dritten Jahrtausend. ISBN 13 978-0-521-86208-0 On site, look for the index-pages of the book and an excerpt (the introduction by Burke and Hsia, and the beginning of the first article, "Cultures of translation in early modern Europe", by Burke) Not yet having consulted the article, I refer to the index, where one finds mentioned (in addition to names of Jesuit missionaries like Ricci, Schall, Buglio, Verbiest, etc.): Jesuits 15, 17, 29, 39-51, 83-84, 99 See also the first article by Burke (quoted in the excerpt): Translation implies 'negotiation', a concept which has expanded its domain in the last generation, moving beyond the worlds of trade and diplomacy to refer to the exchange of ideas and the consequent modification of meanings. The moral is that a given translation should be regarded less as a definitive solution to a problem than as a messy compromise, involving losses or renunciations and leaving the way open for renegotiation. In the case of the early modern period, the idea of negotiated translation seems particularly appropriate to the mission field. Christian missionaries had to decide how far they could go in adapting (or as was said at the time, 'accommodating') the Christian message to the culture in which they were working. In China, for example, Matteo Ricci discovered that if he dressed as a priest no one would take him seriously, so he dressed like a Confucian scholar instead, thus 'translating' his social position into Chinese. He allowed the Chinese whom he converted to pay reverence to their ancestors in the traditional manner, arguing that this was a social custom rather than a religious one. He translated the word 'God' by the neologism Yianzhu, literally 'Lord of heaven', and allowed Chinese Christians to refer simply to Tian, 'Heaven', as Confucius had done (further discussion below, pp. 39-51). In Rome, the Jesuits were accused of having been converted to the religion of the Chinese rather than converting them to Christianity. What appeared in Beijing to be a good cultural translation looked more like a mistranslation in Rome. Other missionaries refused to go so far as Ricci, keeping their traditional black robes and also the Latin word Deus, glossing rather than translating it (below, p. 48). These conflicts offer the most vivid early modern examples of the problems of both interlingual and intercultural translation. Info: Ad Dudink » Bellot, Christoph St. Mariae Himmelfahrt.
