Abstract: Five hundred years of Christian martyrdom are represented in the Ecclesiae militantis triumphi (1583). Engraved by Giovanni Battista Cavalieri, the series that was bound into a book reproduces a fresco cycle in the church of San Stefano Rotondo in Rome. While the church belonged to the Jesuit German-Hungarian College, the book accompanied priests in their proselytizing mission in Northem Europe. This thesis will look at the function of the book in relation to various audiences, in different viewing contexts. Analyzed primarily in relation to the intended Jesuit audience as an object of devotion, the book will also be inserted within the Early Christian revival promoted by Gregory XIII (1572-1585). Finally, it will be looked at in relation to an audience composed of individuals interested in factual knowledge about Early Christian history and in the martyr as a historical figure. A general endeavor of the thesis is to situate the Ecclesiae militantis triumphi in relation to late sixteen-century representations of martyrdom, both Catholic and Protestant, as well as in relation to other contemporary Roman printed works.

The aim of this book is to offer the reader a critical edition of the petitions in their original Italian language that (Catholic) Jews residing in Italy submitted to the Fascist General Administration for Demography and Race (Demorazza) in order either to be “discriminated,” i.e., not subjected to various provisions of Mussolini’s racial laws of 1938, or “Aryanized,” i.e., be considered not of “the Jewish race,” as defined by the convoluted and inconsistent Fascist anti-Semitic legislation. Anyone born of parents who both were of “the Jewish race,” even though professing a religion other … read morethan Judaism, was deemed to be Jewish. Consequently, the racial laws affected not only those Italians who considered themselves Jewish, whether secular or religious, but also a significant number of Catholics whose ancestors had been Jewish, as the majority of the cases contained in this volume show.

Some three centuries ago, the Jesuit Augustin Hallerstein travelled by ship and on horseback for almost three years to arrive in Beijing, the capital of China. Hallerstein’s name was rendered in Chinese to Liu Songling. He stayed in China for thirty five years, living most of this time near the Chinese court and the Beijing Observatory, later becoming a leading foreigner in the field of astronomy in China. Hallerstein was in regular contact with the Chinese Emperor, the Qianlong Emperor who had, as an excellently educated man, a great interest in Jesuit scientists, especially in mathematicians and astronomers, and was a major patron of the arts as well. Therefore the Qianlong Emperor and Liu Songling, two men of different cultural backgrounds, developed an understanding with each other and discussed science and cultural issues, a mutual understanding testified by their preserved letters in world archives.

Confucius, the Philosopher of China is an important work in Sino-European history and in the history of Christianity in China. It is the result of one-hundred years of engagement with the Confucian classics by Jesuit missionaries, starting from Michele Ruggieri and Matteo Ricci, and ending with Prospero Intorcetta and Philippe Couplet. In its preface, the three schools of Confucianism, Daoism and Buddhism are presented, as well as an important argument in favor of Confucianism and of the missionary approach of Ricci. Also, for the first time in the West, the Daxue, Zhongyong and Lunyu were available in translation. The work was published in Paris in 1687, by the Royal Library, now the Bibliothèque Nationale of France. It exerted a considerable influence on the thought of eighteenth century Europe.
This volume consists of four sections. The first section tells the genesis of the work and analyzes its main themes against the background of the Chinese and European intellectual tradition. In the second section, the Preface is fully translated into English. The third section gives the Latin text of the Preface. The last section contains the Chinese text of the Daxue, a Latin translation and an English translation from the Latin, with notes referring to the Chinese commentaries.

Doctoral dissertation. "The thesis consists primarily of an edition of three Jesuit-dramas performed at Innsbruck 1576, 1577 and 1606. The three among themselves dependent texts are traded as manuscripts in the Austrian National Library (Oesterreichische Nationalbibliothek) and the Bavarian State Library (Bayerische Staatsbibliothek). In an introduction are discussed historical context, research history, the meaning Catherine's of Alexandria within the Jesuit-schools and the characteristics of the pieces in detail. Whereupon follows a critical edition with metric translation as well as a comment to all three pieces. The edition makes thereby generally accessible the most renowned Jesuit-dramas in the Tyrol in scholarhip. The close relationship of the three pieces and their dependences among themselves were clarified for the first time. Important for the history of theatre is the  detachment of the Jesuit-drama of humanist-topics in the second half of the 16. century and its approach to the martyr drama: the Catherine-dramas of 1576 and 1577 are the first examples of this transition handed down to us. Finally also a so far not known opportunity arises to observe the "migration" of a topic as a result of different dramaturgical styles and changing historical conditions. Once more can be confirmed by such an investigation the variety in formal developments of the Jesuit-theatre."

The book reviews recent literature on diverse aspects of Jesuit education including its historiography, pedagogy, teaching, philosophy, and Mathematics in its curriculum. The time frame studied has been divided in four main periods. Origins; encompassing the founding of the Society of Jesus in 1540 to the publication of the Ratio Studiorum in 1599. Expansion; covering the publication of the Ratio to the suppression of the Society in 1773. Restoration: covering the period between the 1814 Restoration, until the beginning of the Vatican II Council. Renewal; covering the Society in the post- Vatican area to the present day. The Spiritual Exercises inspired their mission and the pedagogical process. The University of Paris gave them a model, and the Italian Humanists an orientation for their education. The Constitutions gave them the focus and direction to implement their network of schools. Their system had provisions for mathematics instruction that survive to the present. Mathematics played an important role in the beginning of the Scientific Revolution, and it affected the work of influential minds of the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

In this dissertation I make a constructive contribution to a Christian spirituality for late modern religiously plural society. The words ‘a constructive contribution’ designate the methodological approach of the study. The words ‘late modern religiously plural society’ include the combination of social, political, cultural and economic factors in relation to which the question of spirituality will be discussed, and a contribution to a Christian spirituality will be constructed. Based on a description of contemporary religion, in which I refer to modern sociologists (some general and some specifically involved with religion), I outline certain recent characteristics of our contemporary way of relating to religion, and formulate a spirituality for late modern religiously plural society. I see such spirituality arising within three dynamic fields: ‘continuity and internal diversity’, ‘formal and informal structures’ and ‘vita activa and vita contemplativa’. Against this background I present and analyse a case study of Aloysius Pieris, a Christian theologian active in ‘Buddhist’ Sri Lanka and of Thich Nhat Hanh, a Buddhist monk active in ‘Christian’ France. Based on identified presuppositions and in dialogue with these two personalities I proceede toward a construction which contains some basic indicators of a Christian spirituality for late modern religiously plural society. The concepts ‘community’, ‘baptism’ and ‘grace and concern’ are central to the construction.

 The aim of this dissertation is to determine the role played by Joseph-Marie Amiot (1718-1793), a representative 18th century Jesuit in China, in cultural relations between China and the West. Its methodological basis is translation studies and imagology. It examines the historical context, Amiot’s translations and his correspondence with Western scholars. It examines Amiot’s complicated cultural identity, in order to understand the influence of the Jesuit tradition on his thinking and the transformation of his cultural identity through constant contact with another tradition and to trace the impact of his complex cultural identity on his work, and thus to draw out the meaning of the picture he painted of China.

In this volume, Hui Zou analyzes historical, architectural, visual, literary, and philosophical perspectives on the Western-styled garden that formed part of the great Yuanming Yuan complex in Beijing, constructed during the Qing dynasty. Designed and built in the late eighteenth century by Italian and French Jesuits, the garden described in this book was a wonderland of multistoried buildings, fountains, labyrinths, and geometrical hills. It even included an open-air theater. Through detailed examination of historical literature and representations, Zou analyzes the ways in which the Jesuits accommodated their design within the Chinese cultural context. He shows how an especially important element of their approach was the application of a linear perspective—the “line-method”—to create the jing, the Chinese concept of the bounded bright view of a garden scene. Hui Zou’s book demonstrates how Jesuit metaphysics fused with Chinese cosmology and broadens our understanding of cultural and religious encounters in early Chinese modernity. It presents an intriguing reflection on the interaction between Western metaphysics and the poetical tradition of Chinese culture. The volume will be of interest to scholars and students in a variety of fields, including literature, philosophy, architecture, landscape and urban studies, and East-West comparative cultural studies.

This is a translation into Persian of the chapters 2 to 10 of the "first book" of the Latin version of \'De Christiana Expeditione apud Sinas\' (first edition 1615), which contains a description of the geography, the arts, administration, rites and religious sects of China. Chapter 2 of the first book was split up by the translator into two separate sections, but the other eight are preserved as they are in the original, and altogether form ten sections.

The translator Muḥammed Zamān, surnamed Farangīkhwān (literally "skilled in European languages") lived in the seventeenth century. It is not clear whether he should be identified with Paolo Muḥammed Zamān who was a convert to Christianity, sometimes identified with Muḥammed Zamān born Ḥājjī Yūsuf Qummī, the painter of minatures with Christian themes after Flemish models (who possibly even traveled to Rome). The original manuscript is entitled Ta\'rīkh-i-Chīn: see Wladimir Ivanow, Concise Descriptive Catalogue of the Persian Manuscripts in the Curzon Collection Asiatic Society of Bengal (Bibliotheca Indica 241), Calcutta: Baptist Mission Press, 1926, no. 93 (pp. 96-98). There was already a nineteenth-century printed edition of the text: Exoos (Rev.) — History of China. Translated into Persian by Mahomed Zaman Khan. (at the request of Rev. Bournouf) (Allygurh Scientific Society No. 2.), Calcutta: Baptist Mission Press, 1864.
The 2008 annotated edition has been made after comparison with the Chinese, English and Italian translations. The work includes a biography and bibliography of both Muḥammed Zamān (with reproduction of some of his paintings) and Matteo Ricci.

A new interpretation of the Jesuit mission to New France is here proposed by using, for comparison and contrast, the earlier Jesuit experience in Japan. In order to present revisionist perspectives of the Jesuit missions based on a broader international framework beyond North America, the existing historical paradigms of the Jesuit missionary activity to Amerindians based on the limited regional history of New France are re-examined. The time period of analysis covers one entire century, from the mid-sixteenth century to the mid-seventeenth century. The Jesuit evangelists used in this analysis include European, mainly Iberian and French, missionaries. The non-European converts dealt with in this discussion are Japanese and Amerindian peoples. The aspects considered for revisions encompass the interpretations of foreign cultures, the basic evangelistic approach of preaching, winning converts and educating them, organizing Christian communities and the non-European practice of the religion. The Christian mission in Japan has proved to be a useful tool for these purposes.

The first critical biography of Ricci to use all relevant sources, both Chinese and Western, A Jesuit in the Forbidden City tells the story of a remarkable life that bridged Counter-Reformation Catholic Europe and China under the Ming dynasty. Hsia follows the life of Ricci from his childhood in Macerata, through his education in Rome, to his sojourn in Portuguese India, before the start of his long journey of self-discovery and cultural encounter in the Ming realm. Along the way, we glimpse the workings of the Portuguese maritime empire in Asia, the mission of the Society of Jesus, and life in the European enclave of Macau on the Chinese coast, as well as invaluable sketches of Ricci's fellow Jesuits and portraits of the Chinese mandarins who formed networks indispensible for Ricci's success.

Examining a range of new sources, Hsia offers important new insights into Ricci's long period of trial and frustration in Guangdong province, where he first appeared in the persona of a foreign Buddhist monk, before the crucial move to Nanchang in 1595 that led to his sustained intellectual conversation with a leading Confucian scholar and subsequent synthesis of Christianity and Confucianism in propagating the Gospels in China. With his expertise in cartography, mathematics and astronomy, Ricci quickly won recognition, especially after he had settled in Nanjing in 1598, the southern capital of the Ming dynasty. As his reputation and friendships grew, Ricci launched into a sharp polemic against Buddhism, while his career found its crowning achievement in the imperial capital of Beijing, leaving behind a life, work, and legacy that is still very much alive today.

This history of China derives mainly from the writings of the Flemish Jesuit Ferdinand Verbiest (1623–1688), who was sent as a missionary to China, and eventually, despite violent opposition, became Head of the Mathematical Board and Director of the Beijing Observatory for the Kangxi Emperor. The introduction to this 1854 edition sketches the life of Verbiest and discusses the sources of the text; an appendix gives a description by Verbiest himself of a hunting expedition on which he accompanied the emperor.

Abstract: The research concentrates on the analysis and translation in Italian language of the Treatise on the techniques of memorization. The Treatise was written in Chinese language by Matteo Ricci, a Jesuit missionary at the end of the sixteenth century. At first we take into account the role of mnemonics in the Jesuit educational system; we than take into consideration the important terminological activity carried out by Ricci during his life in China. We observe the main contributes of Ricci to the invention of neologisms in Chinese language, in order to transmit Western knowledge to Chinese literati. We then analyse the Treatise on the basis of other linguists' previous studies and we identify key concepts to be analysed in order to describe the main terminological activity used in the Treatise.

Marc Lindeijer (NER) is a Dutch Jesuit who after completing tertianship in the USA recently moved to Rome to work in the department of the postulator (the saint-maker) in the Jesuit Head Quarters. On February 27, he defended his dissertation on the fruitless efforts of the Dutch Jesuits to get father Jan Philip Roothaan beatified. Father Roothaan was General Superior of the Jesuits from 1829 to 1853. The devotion to Father Roothaan, the work for his canonization and simultaneous opposite tendencies in the Dutch Jesuit province towards more openness and adaptation to changes in civil society, can all be explained, according to father Lindeijer, by the typical 20th century tendency to follow an utopian dream. The author characterizes the Catholic ideal of striving for holiness with Father Roothaan as an example as utopian, comparable to other 20th century utopias such as the dreams for a better world of the fascists, the communists or the soixante-huitards. The central figures in this vast and detailed study are father Cor Ligthart SJ who died in 1980 in the Amsterdam residence of De Krijtberg and leading professors in the Jesuit theologate of Maastricht.

In this edition, the Latin texts have been reconstituted, translated into English (by Golvers) and annotated (by Golvers and Nicole Halsberghe). The introduction situates the manuscripts within the corpus of Verbiest’s Latin writings and emphasises both the sections of the manuscripts that were subsequently included in the well-known ‘Compendium Latinum’ and ‘Astronomia Europaea’ edition (Dillingen, 1687) and those that were eventually omitted. Description: Though Jesuits assumed a variety of roles as missionaries in late imperial China, their most memorable guise was that of scientific expert, whose maps, clocks, astrolabes, and armillaries reportedly astonished the Chinese. But the icon of the missionary-scientist is itself a complex myth. Masterfully correcting the standard story of China Jesuits as simple conduits for Western science, Florence C. Hsia shows how these missionary-scientists remade themselves as they negotiated the place of the profane sciences in a religious enterprise.

'Sojourners in a Strange Land' develops a genealogy of Jesuit conceptions of scientific life within the Chinese mission field from the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries. Analyzing the printed record of their endeavors in natural philosophy and mathematics, Hsia identifies three models of the missionary man of science by their genres of writing: mission history, travelogue, and academic collection. Drawing on the history of early modern Europe’s scientific, religious, and print culture, she uses the elaboration and reception of these scientific personae to construct the first collective biography of the Jesuit missionary-scientist’s many incarnations in late imperial China.

The book contains the proceedings of an international conference held in Chieti, Italy (27-28 October 2006) to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the death of Alessandro Valignano (1539-1606). The papers are in English, Italian, and Spanish, with English abstracts. There are also several additional papers and studies that were not originally presented at the conference. The book also has a section of illustrations, including rare engravings and images of Valignano, as well as high resolution colour reproductions of manuscripts related to or by Valignano preserved in the Jesuit Roman Archives (ARSI), many of which are reproduced here for the first time.

Therefore missionaries who came to China in the 16th to 18th centuries seldom acted as physicians or surgeons, but had lay brothers for this task. But in the field of theory there was a kind of exchange between Europe and China. .... • Philip Vanhaelemeeersch, “The Figurists, and G.B. Vico on the Chinese: Esoteric wisdom versus poetic wisdom” (pp. 69-86)

Abstract: In the 17th-18th century a number of Jesuit missionaries in China, called the ‘figurists,’ propagated an exegetical method aimed at reading allegories of the Christian truths in the Chinese ideograms and Classics. At exactly the same time, but in Naples, the scholar Giambattista Vico [1668-1744] laid the basis for an alternative to this quest for esoteric wisdom. Vico’s point of departure is his discovery of the imaginative faculty in the human mind, or ‘poetic wisdom’, so very apparent in the language of the Chinese. In developing his ideas Vico undoubtedly received input from the Chinese priests who formed the nucleus of the later Chinese College at Naples.

Description: The Kangxi Atlas (41 sheets, 179 p. index) is the result of Jesuit surveys made between 1708-17 for the Kangxi Emperor. This was the first countrywide map based on modern field surveys in China. The 41 sheets can be put together to make up a complete map of China. The atlas here is reproduced from a 1929 facsimile of the original work, which engraved by Matteo Ripa in 1719.

The Yongzheng Atlas (99 sheets, 251 p. index) here is reproduced from the original work of 1728 (collected in Library of the Chinese Academy of Sciences), and it was based on earlier map Kangxi Atlas. But it covers a wider land area than Kangxi Atlas, and it is more detailed in content. The map is composed of 99 sheets, divided into ten equal horizontal rows, hence the name “Map of the Yongzheng Period in Ten Rows”.

The Qianlong Atlas (103 sheets, 365 p. index) here is reproduced from a 1931 facsimile. The atlas was originally published in 1775, engraved by Michel Benoist. Compared with the Kangxi Atlas and Yongzheng Atlas, The Qianlong Atlas covers a more extensive area. It covers almost the entire Asian continent, encompassing the Arctic Ocean in the north, India Ocean in the south, East China Sea in the east, and the Mediterranean Sea in the west. The map consists of 103 sheets, arranged in 13 horizontal rows, so it was also called “Map of the Qianlong Period in Thirtheen Rows”.

Abstract (p. 1) :
Europe in the sixteenth and most of the seventeenth century was engulfed in a wave of Sinophilia. However, by the eighteenth century a dramatic shift in the popular view of China in Europe occurred and Sinophobic writings began to dominate. The primary scholarly argument about the causes behind this shift in perceptions maintains the transformation stemmed predominantly from changes in European history, particularly, economic growth and political consolidation. This paper asks how the motives, the roles and the consequences of the Jesuits as agents of information regarding China affected the European perception of the Middle Kingdom and contributed to the evolution of Orientalism. It examines the evolution of the Jesuit mission in China, the role of personal motivation and problems surrounding conceptual and practical barriers to the construction and transmission of information. It finds that economic progress and political consolidation in Europe did result in a changing of perspectives on the nature of the Empire of China. However, this shift did not occur solely due to endogenous changes in Europe, but was also a result of the creation of the one-dimensional image of China by the Jesuits according to their personal motivations and unique context.

Il ne réduisait pas le monde à " notre lieu", mais étendait au contraire celui-ci jusqu'aux limites du monde. Le recueil d'études rassemblé ici par le Groupe de recherches sur les missions ibériques modernes (École des hautes études en sciences sociales) s'efforce de prendre la mesure des effets de cette extension sur les institutions religieuses européennes, neuves ou réformées aux XVIe et XVIIe siècles : comment conçoivent-elles la formation de leurs membres, et l'accomplissement de leur vocation, dans ces horizons imprévisibles ? Comment vivent-elles leurs relations, entre elles et avec le pouvoir conquérant des empires en formation ? Comment voient-elles et redécouvrent-elles les anciens mondes, avec un œil dilaté à l'échelle d'une humanité planétaire ?
