ISBN 9789087041397 Marc Lindeijer (NER) is a Dutch Jesuit who after completing tertianship in the USA recently moved to Rome to work in the department of the postulator (the saint-maker) in the Jesuit Head Quarters. On February 27, he defended his dissertation on the fruitless efforts of the Dutch Jesuits to get father Jan Philip Roothaan beatified. Father Roothaan was General Superior of the Jesuits from 1829 to 1853. The devotion to Father Roothaan, the work for his canonization and simultaneous opposite tendencies in the Dutch Jesuit province towards more openness and adaptation to changes in civil society, can all be explained, according to father Lindeijer, by the typical 20th century tendency to follow an utopian dream. The author characterizes the Catholic ideal of striving for holiness with Father Roothaan as an example as utopian, comparable to other 20th century utopias such as the dreams for a better world of the fascists, the communists or the soixante-huitards. The central figures in this vast and detailed study are father Cor Ligthart SJ who died in 1980 in the Amsterdam residence of De Krijtberg and leading professors in the Jesuit theologate of Maastricht. » Cava Mesa, María Jesús Pedro Arrupe Gondra. This book makes available two manuscripts by Ferdinand Verbiest , S.J. (1623-1688), written in 1676 in Beijing for the attention of the Russian tsar and brought to Moscow by the legate Nicolas Spathary Milescu. Both texts represent the oldest version of the ‘Astronomia Europaea’ corpus, and were until recently totally forgotten. Their recent discovery was due to the recognition of a manuscript copy produced by Chrysanthos Notaras in Moscow in 1693. This manuscript had languished in obscurity in the library of the Metochion of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem in Constantinople for centuries. In this edition, the Latin texts have been reconstituted, translated into English (by Golvers) and annotated (by Golvers and Nicole Halsberghe). The introduction situates the manuscripts within the corpus of Verbiest’s Latin writings and emphasises both the sections of the manuscripts that were subsequently included in the well-known ‘Compendium Latinum’ and ‘Astronomia Europaea’ edition (Dillingen, 1687) and those that were eventually omitted. Furthermore, the introduction traces the histories of the Moscow manuscripts and especially their Constantinople copy – the only remaining testimonium of them – and chronicles the hitherto unknown reception of 17th century Jesuit astronomy, mechanics and physics in Russia and South-eastern Europe in the post-Byzantine era. Table of contents (pp. 7-9): PART ONE: The manuscript, the texts and their history (Noël Golvers) 1. Will be published November 2009. Description: Though Jesuits assumed a variety of roles as missionaries in late imperial China, their most memorable guise was that of scientific expert, whose maps, clocks, astrolabes, and armillaries reportedly astonished the Chinese. But the icon of the missionary-scientist is itself a complex myth. Masterfully correcting the standard story of China Jesuits as simple conduits for Western science, Florence C. Hsia shows how these missionary-scientists remade themselves as they negotiated the place of the profane sciences in a religious enterprise. 'Sojourners in a Strange Land' develops a genealogy of Jesuit conceptions of scientific life within the Chinese mission field from the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries. Analyzing the printed record of their endeavors in natural philosophy and mathematics, Hsia identifies three models of the missionary man of science by their genres of writing: mission history, travelogue, and academic collection. Drawing on the history of early modern Europe’s scientific, religious, and print culture, she uses the elaboration and reception of these scientific personae to construct the first collective biography of the Jesuit missionary-scientist’s many incarnations in late imperial China. » Leugers, Antonia Jesuiten in Hitlers Wehrmacht. Abstract (p. 37): According to canon law, priests were not supposed to act as physician or exercise medicine. Therefore missionaries who came to China in the 16th to 18th centuries seldom acted as physicians or surgeons, but had lay brothers for this task. But in the field of theory there was a kind of exchange between Europe and China. .... (p. 38: In my paper I will deal shortly with the different stages of the encounter between Chinese and European medicine, my main focus being on Western sources about the time of the beginning of the French Jesuit mission).
Abstract: In the 17th-18th century a number of Jesuit missionaries in China, called the ‘figurists,’ propagated an exegetical method aimed at reading allegories of the Christian truths in the Chinese ideograms and Classics. At exactly the same time, but in Naples, the scholar Giambattista Vico [1668-1744] laid the basis for an alternative to this quest for esoteric wisdom. Vico’s point of departure is his discovery of the imaginative faculty in the human mind, or ‘poetic wisdom’, so very apparent in the language of the Chinese. In developing his ideas Vico undoubtedly received input from the Chinese priests who formed the nucleus of the later Chinese College at Naples.
Abstract: According to research and interviews with old Taiwanese Catholics. The Four Character Classic (Sizi jingwen) has been very important in the missionary history of Taiwan. ... This paper is to compare the Gongjiao Sizi jingwen published in 1935 with the one published in 1642 by Giulio Aleni. Hopefully the changes and difference between the two versions will reveal the different situations and the development of knowledge and theology of those times. » Schall, Adam Geschichte der Chinesischen Mission 1591 – 1666 Bad Mergentheim: Ascanio Verlag, 2008, pp. 472

Facsimile reprints of three 18th-century maps of China, made with the collaboration of Jesuits (e.g. Michel Benoist), including the famous “Jesuiten-Atlas der Kanghsi-Zeit” (Walter Fuchs, 1943) which was engraved by Matteo Ripa. Index compiled by Wang Qianjin and Liu Ruoying. 3 facsimile atlases (loose in 3 cases under 1 cover : ill.) ; 59 cm. — ISBN 978-7-119-04722-5 (set) Description: The Kangxi Atlas (41 sheets, 179 p. index) is the result of Jesuit surveys made between 1708-17 for the Kangxi Emperor. This was the first countrywide map based on modern field surveys in China. The 41 sheets can be put together to make up a complete map of China. The atlas here is reproduced from a 1929 facsimile of the original work, which engraved by Matteo Ripa in 1719. The Yongzheng Atlas (99 sheets, 251 p. index) here is reproduced from the original work of 1728 (collected in Library of the Chinese Academy of Sciences), and it was based on earlier map Kangxi Atlas. But it covers a wider land area than Kangxi Atlas, and it is more detailed in content. The map is composed of 99 sheets, divided into ten equal horizontal rows, hence the name “Map of the Yongzheng Period in Ten Rows”. The Qianlong Atlas (103 sheets, 365 p. index) here is reproduced from a 1931 facsimile. The atlas was originally published in 1775, engraved by Michel Benoist. Compared with the Kangxi Atlas and Yongzheng Atlas, The Qianlong Atlas covers a more extensive area. It covers almost the entire Asian continent, encompassing the Arctic Ocean in the north, India Ocean in the south, East China Sea in the east, and the Mediterranean Sea in the west. The map consists of 103 sheets, arranged in 13 horizontal rows, so it was also called “Map of the Qianlong Period in Thirtheen Rows”. » Millar, Ashley E. Rather than burying Ricci immediately in a plain coffin near the church, according to their European practice, the Jesuits followed Chinese custom and kept Ricci's body for nearly a year in an air-tight Chinese-style coffin and asked the emperor for burial ground outside the city walls. Moreover, at Ricci's funeral itself, on their own initiative the Chinese performed their funerary rituals, thus starting a long and complex cultural dialogue in which they took the lead during the next century. The Interweaving of Rituals explores the role of ritual - specifically rites related to death and funerals - in cross-cultural exchange, demonstrating a gradual interweaving of Chinese and European ritual practices at all levels of interaction in seventeenth-century China. This includes the interplay of traditional and new rituals by a Christian community of commoners, the grafting of Christian funerals onto established Chinese practices, and the sponsorship of funeral processions for Jesuit officials by the emperor. Through careful observation of the details of funerary practice, Nicolas Standaert illustrates the mechanics of two-way cultural interaction. His thoughtful analysis of the ritual exchange between two very different cultural traditions is especially relevant in today's world of global ethnic and religious tension. His insights will be of interest to a broad range of scholars, from historians to anthropologists to theologians. Nicolas Standaert is professor of Sinology at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. He is the author of Yang Tingyun, Confucian and Christian in Late Ming China: His Life and Thought and editor of Handbook of Christianity in China: Volume 1, 635-1800. Nota Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 65-03, Section: A, page: 0863. Directors: Alberto Ramos Santana; Carmen Noya Gallardo. Tesis Tesis - Univ. de Cádiz, 2004 Summary:This thesis constitutes a detailed study of the rectorate (1901--08) of Father Joseph M. Bampton, S.J. at Beaumont College, a secondary boarding school for boys founded by the English (now British) Province of the Society of Jesus at Old Windsor (Berkshire, England) in 1861. The period under research is of great interest in its own right, since it was precisely in February 1906 when, with the admission of Father Joseph M. Bampton to the Headmasters' Conference (HMC), Beaumont College---previously a private school---was recognised as a public school. Several factors which made this recognition possible, and which Beaumont shared with its Protestant counterparts (Eton is only a few miles upstream on the other side of the Thames), are analysed: character formation, athleticism, Oxford and Cambridge links, military spirit, autonomy of the Rector, independence from the State system of education, etc. One of the conclusions of the thesis is that this transformation was feasible thanks to the Rector's deliberate adoption of some of the educational methods of the most prestigious non-Catholic public schools of England (such as Eton, Harrow or Rugby). Prominent among these methods was the introduction of the "English system" of discipline (which the Rector named "Captain system"), or participation of the boys themselves in the government of the school, as opposed to the age-long "Jesuit system" of strict and ceaseless boy supervision by masters of discipline or Prefects. We have drawn upon a substantial collection of sources (both manuscript and printed) for the elaboration of the thesis. It will contribute to enlarge our knowledge in the fields of the History of Education, the Civilization and Culture of Great Britain and the Comparative Systems of Education. Furthermore, the research includes the study of the education and training of a sector of the contemporary ruling class in the United Kingdom and in other European countries like France and Spain. [In the Company of Books: Manuscripts and books in the Jesuit missions in East Asia 1540-1620] The Jesuits, more than any other early modern organization, were in close contact with books and with manuscripts, which were paramount to all aspects of their activities. The connections of the Society of Jesus with European and Asian written cultures were very intense, in terms of consumption and production of written texts, and are extremely well documented in European 16th and 17th century sources, thus providing a perfect subject for research. The chronological frame chosen for the present work (1540-1620) coincides with the historical moment when the Society of Jesus was testing a new method of cultural adaptation in China as well as in Japan, one that was particularly dependent on textual practices. The present research project, then, tried to identify: European books read by the Jesuits; books written by the Jesuits; European and Asian books translated by the Jesuits; books printed in China and in Japan by the Jesuits, in European and in Asian languages. » Aregay, Merid Wolde e.a. ISBN 978-3-8050-0548-7 ISSN 0179-261X A renewed attention to visual culture is one of the recent developments in the study of cultural contacts between China and Europe in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The subject of this book is the illustrated Life of Christ presented to the Chinese emperor in 1640 by the Jesuit missionary Johann Adam Schall von Bell S.J. (1592?1666). The origin of the work is a small parchment booklet with coloured miniature paintings based on a wide variety of prints by well-known European engravers (e.g., H. Goltzius, J. Stradanus). It was compiled in Munich in 1617 and a Chinese version with the title Jincheng shuxiang was published in Beijing more than twenty years later in a nicely illustrated edition. This book is composed of two parts. Part I traces the complex history of production of Jincheng shuxiang, from its European origin to its Chinese reception. It also analyses the illustrations and the text. Part II contains the reproduction of the Chinese text and 48 illustrations, the reproduction of the identified original European prints and a translation of the Chinese text. It is hoped that the wider diffusion of this rare primary source, which is now reprinted for the first time since the seventeenth century, will further stimulate the study of visual culture in Sino-Western relations. The book will be of interest to a broad range of scholars, from art historians of China and Europe to scholars interested in print history, and theologians. The Jesuit Series Part Five (P-Z) Corpus Librorum Emblematum(CLE) Series The Corpus Librorum Emblematum (CLE) series presents documentation relating to printed books belonging to the tradition of emblems and imprese. The individual catalogues provide comprehensive short-title information accompanied by facsimile reproductions of title pages, and, where possible, also a sample emblem. The volumes provide a representative selection of library locations and pressmarks. Fingerprints and facsimile title pages enhance the bibliographic description of the books so that the record provided by CLE contains sufficient information to identify the edition or issue of a given emblem book. The bibliography encompasses all extant books of emblems, works illustrated with emblems, and books dealing with the theory and practice of emblematics written by members of The Society of Jesus. Translations and adaptations of Jesuit works in all languages are also included. The complete Jesuit Series will comprise some 1700 entries: about 500 first editions, and a further 1200 subsequent editions, issues and translations. » Ricci, Matteo; Mignini, Filippo (ed.) The Jesuits produced more books on the topic of emblem studies than did any other identifiable group of writers, comprising a vast spectrum of subject matter with a wide diversity of structure and creating an enormous impact on seventeenth- and eighteenth-century culture. In his new book Studies in the Jesuit Emblem, G. Richard Dimler has gathered together selections from his past studies in Jesuit emblems, spanning some 25 years. His revised articles incorporate a wide array of topics including, among others, the state of our knowledge of the Jesuit emblem book, Jesuit emblem theory, the genesis and the rise of the Jesuit Emblem, Jesuit reaction to Andrea Alciato, the Imago Primi Saeculi, Edmund Arwaker's translation of the Pia Desideria, as well as some specific Jesuit themes such as the bee-topos and the egg. Also included in the book are hitherto unpublished essays on Herman Hugo, the evolution of an Ignatian emblem book, and a taxonomical inquiry into the eighteenth-century Jesuit emblem. 124 b/w ill., 160 x 240 mm, Hardback. ISBN 978-2-503-52469-6, EUR 95.00 The present volume of essays, Emblemata Sacra. The Rhetoric and Hermeneutics of Illustrated Sacred Discourse, follows a conference that took place in January 2005 in Leuven and Louvain-la-Neuve, thanks to the close collaboration between the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Literature Department) and the Université Catholique de Louvain (the research group 'Figures et formes de la spiritualité dans la littérature et les expressions artistiques'). The 38 essays have been organised in seven sections. The first section ('Historical and methodological issues') presents methodological bases for the study of emblematics and spiritual images, as well as the elements necessary for the Christian contextualisation of the corpus. The second section ('Exegesis of the Scriptures and the Creation'), complementary to the first section, is devoted to exegetical processes developed in different contexts and seeks to emphasise the correspondence between the exegesis of Sacred Scripture and the exegesis of the Creation, which are the two central symbolisms in Christianity. The third section ('The image in absentia') focuses on the most critical aspect of the encounter between the Word and the Image, in the form of a paradoxical iconoclastic image, already mentioned in the first section. The fourth section ('Rhetoric and poetics of the image') exposes the mutual exchanges between the word of the images and the images of the word. The last three sections all deal with the uses of figures in determined contexts. Thus, the fifth section ('The image performance') explores staged, incarnated, and exhibited figures, while the sixth section ('Circulation of images among different faiths') gathers studies about different confessional contexts in which spiritual images are used to support and feed the polemics, and the seventh section ('The efficient image') opens up the chronology toward the 19th century and then to our own time. 14 essays out of the 38 are dealing with Jesuit writers and the history of the Company. All these articles have been entered in this database (see 'articles in books'). » Spica, Anne-Élisabeth Symbolique et emblématique humaniste. Translated, with Introduction and Notes by Erik Zurcher
Monumenta Serica Monograph Series LVI/1+2 2 vols. ISBN 978-3-8050-0543-2, ISSN 0179-261X. From the introduction: Kouduo richao is an extensive compilation of notes made by Li Joubiao and more than twenty-five other Christian literati during their conversation with Jesuit missionaries (G. Aleni, A. Rudomina e.a.) in Fujian between 13 March 1630 to 4 July 1640. Among the dozens of texts composed by late Ming and early Qing converts it stands out as the only source that allows us a glimpse of Jesuit missionary practice - "accommodation in action" - and of the various reponses of their Chinese audience, both converts and interested outsiders. It also shows us the working of the underlying processes of selection, adaptation and integration by which, in the milieu of local Confucian elites, the foreign creed was transformed into a marginal Chinese minority religion. This major publication for the field of seventeenth-century contacts between China and Europe includes: Volume 1: - Intoduction: pp. 9-178: Text, Scene, Actors (Missionaries, Converts, Others), Doctrine, Communal Rituals, Social Aspects, Western Studies - Translation: pp. 181- 618: a full annotated translation of the eight books (juan) of Volume 2: - The Chinese Text of - Bibliography; pp. 770-814 - Index and Glossary: pp. 815-862. Polish works of art are set in the context of numerous examples of European art and occasionally also Asian works, as essential analogies or direct iconographic sources. Much space has been geiven to the descriptions of Asia and its inhabitants in the Polish iconography of St. Francis Xaver. A special attention has been paid to the artistic activity of Michael Boym SJ (1612–1659). There is a very interesting portrait of Andrzej Rudomina by an artist from Vilnius (17/18th c.) = ill. 30. » anon. From a review of the book by A.J.R. Russell-Wood in the American Historical Review (2002), 107/5 : "... Catalogs of personnel provide the basis for part three. A limited prosopographical exercise identifies the 164 Jesuits in Brazil in 1598 by name, place of birth, age, state of health, date of admission into the society, studies, ministries, and higher education. A rare insight is provided by the profile of each member—skills, aptitudes, and temperament—recorded in a confidential second catalog." » Fatica, Michele (ed.) Here Elman pays special attention to the Jesuit era between 1600 and 1800, when Catholics proscribed Copernicus in China, and shows how that influence carried over to the 1840s to the 1890s, when modern science took root despite Protestant missionaries' contempt for Darwinian evolution ... A Collection of five series, of which the third covers in 25 volumes the 'Eastward transmission of the Gospel'. Of interest to jesuitica are:
Vol. 1: Nestorianism (pp. 1-128) Eight texts (of Tang times), followed by two editions (1878 and 1927 reprints) of Manuel Dias' commentary on the Nestorian inscription (1644) and two modern studies: Jingjiao bei kao (by Feng Chengjun) and Ye-li-ke-wen kao (by Chen Yuan). vol. 1 (pp. 129-791), Catholicism, section 'Bible': Manuel Dias, Shengjing zhijie (1636/42); Xiao Shunhua, Zongdu dashi lu /Acts (1941); Wu Jingxiong, Xinjing quanji /NT (1948). In others words, in vol. 2 one finds the 'li' section of Tianxue chuhan, but without Aleni's Zhifang waiji (the 'qi' section, with e.g. Jihe yuanben, is lacking in Dongchuan fuyin). There is in Dongchuan fuyin (vol. 2, pp. 210-217) a copy of another old edition of Ricci's Jiaoyou lun (provenance not indicated, but called an edition of Chongzhen 23, which apparently is a mistake for Wanli 23). This is the so-called Feng Yingjing edition, which in all likelihood was reproduced from Studia Missionalia 7 (1952), the ten unnumbered pages before p. 449, which contain a photocopy of the copy at the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale at Rome (shelfmark: 72 C.467), The remaining four texts are: -- Furtado & Li Zhizao, Huanyou quan, reproduced from a copy in the Huadong shifan daxue (vol. 11, pp. 161-350); the same copy is also reproduced in the Siku quanshu cunmu congshu, division 'zi' (philosophers), vol. 94, pp. 1-188. -- Vagnone, Kongji gezhi (manuscript from the Nanjing tushuguan), reproduced in addition to the printed copy in Wenxian sanbian. -- Verbiest, Xifang yaoji, reproduced from the encyclopedia Zhaodai congshu. -- Trigault, Xiru ermu zi, provenance not indicated, but apparently a photocopy of an earlier facsimile edition (1958?) Several of the 19th and 20th texts are not, strictly speaking, Christian texts but historical studies, for example (especially in the vols. 6-9): ... -- Feng Chengjun, translation (1941) of Robert Chabrié, Michel Boym, jésuite polonais et la fin des Ming en Chine (1646-1662), Paris, 1933, cf. ISBN: 7-5347-3807-5
This is a collection of articles that Zhang Xiping published in recent years: mainly on the writings of missionaries, ranging from Bouvet's texts on the Yijing to the early studies of Chinese linguistics. The book contains also three essays concerning the writings of Matteo Ricci (which the author is supposed to publish). It is rather unfortunate that this re-edition insufficiently took into account earlier suggestions that were made to the textual edition of these writings. For instance, in the chapter on Ricci's Catechism, pp. 47-58., published earlier in Shijie zongjiao yanjiu (1999:4) and in Zhang Xiping's Zhongguo yu Ouzhou zaoqi zongjiao he zhexue jiaoliu, Beijing 2001, pp. 157-171), the author identifies the Barb.Or.132.1 copy (a text probably dating after the 1660s) as Matteo Ricci's first edition of 1605. However, already in 1934, Pasquale d'Elia discovered a copy of the original edition and described it in his Fonti Ricciane (1942-1949). It was approved by many other scholars, as Ad Dudink showed in a detailed article on the subject (A. Dudink, "Tianzhu jiaoyao, The Catechism (1605), Published by Matteo Ricci", Sino-Western Cultural Relations Journal XXIV (2002), pp. 38-50). Zhang Xiping mentions this article (p.34; mistakenly quoted as 2000.2), but, without further argumentation, concludes that "there is no consensus in the scholarly world, and that it is still under discussion". One can bring forward such opinion, but in his transcription of the text of the Catechism of Barb.Or.132.1. numerous mistakes were not corrected (mistakes that were pointed out in SWCRJ, p. 43 n. 26, .g. wrong characters or splitting up prayers). Errors in transcription unfortunately also occur in the chapter "Li Madou de "tianzhujiao jiaoyi" chutan [Preliminary Exploration of Matteo Ricci's "Christian Doctrine"]", pp. 59-79 (which is also published in Zhongguo wenhua yanjiu 2005:2, pp. 122-133). This chapter was originally a paper on an anonymous manuscript in the National Library in Beijing, which the author presented at the Ricci Conference in Beijing, October 2001. The errors in transcription of the text are so numerous that it can hardly be used as a reliable text edition. For instance, the original text includes the Latin text in two versions: in the transcription of the first three sentences of them there are at least thirteen mistakes: peolapsum (prolapsum); nemineminter (neminem inter); potuit (barred in original); supplica (supplicia); H?c (Hâc); inentione (intentione); Daus (Deus), imlicatum (implicatum); propensionnibus (propensionibus); inferorrum (inferorum); potuit (not in original); proind (proinde); pauperitaten (pauperitatem). » Shi, Jingqian (Spence, Jonathan D.)
